Just who or what is a DoP, or Director of Photography?

Where a photographer takes a still image a DoP creates moving images.

On a film set It's the Directors job to control the action and tell the story, whereas it's my job to realise the directors vision and create the look that they want to achieve.

What does this mean in practice?

Working alongside the Director and Art Director, I manage the team that lights the scene and sets the camera and associated kit to achieve that perfect framing, even if it means hanging about £75k worth of Arri Alexa and Ziess Lens off a magic arm or two!
